Description

Make the popular Jimmy Johns Bread at home with our recipe. Crispy outside, soft inside – just like the famous French bread you love.

Ingredients

  • Water: 1 1/2 cups
  • Dry yeast: 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar: 1 tablespoon
  • All-purpose flour: 4 1/2 cups
  • Salt: 2 teaspoons
  • Vegetable oil: 1/4 cup
  • Cornmeal: 1/2 cup (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the water, yeast, and sugar. Let it stand for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add 3 cups of flour, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. Gradually incorporate the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour, kneading on a floured surface until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the dough, divide it into two equal parts, and shape each into a long, thin loaf. Place the loaves on a baking sheet greased and dusted with cornmeal. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly dust the loaves with flour and make diagonal slashes on the top.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  • For the dough to rise well, it needs a warm environment. If your kitchen is cold, consider placing the dough in an oven with the light on (but the oven turned off) or near a warm spot.
  • The cornmeal helps prevent the bread from sticking and gives the bottom a nice texture. However, if you don’t have cornmeal, you can also use parchment paper.
  • Every oven is different. It’s a good idea to start checking the bread a few minutes before the recommended baking time to ensure it doesn’t overbake.
  • For a different flavor, consider adding herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough. You can also sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top before baking.
