Description

These Soft Christmas Peppermints, also known as Easy Butter Mints, are a festive and delightful treat perfect for the holiday season. Made with simple ingredients like butter, powdered sugar, and peppermint extract, they have a soft, creamy texture and a refreshing peppermint flavor. The candy features a beautiful twisted red and white design, making them an attractive addition to any holiday dessert platter or gift basket.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter Mixture

  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract (adjust to taste)

Coloring

  • Red coloring gel or food coloring

Instructions

  1. Prepare Workspace: Start by prepping a workspace using parchment paper, waxed paper, or a baking mat. Keep extra powdered sugar nearby for rolling the dough as needed.
  2. Beat Butter: Place the room temperature butter in a large mixing bowl and beat it until light and fluffy to create a smooth base for the mints.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Add the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and peppermint extract to the butter. Mix thoroughly until you achieve a firm dough consistency suitable for shaping.
  4. Divide and Color Dough: Divide the dough into two portions. Tint about one-quarter of the dough with red coloring gel and leave the remaining three-quarters uncolored (white). Form each into separate balls and set aside.
  5. Form Ropes: Take small quantities of each dough color and roll them into ropes—make a thinner rope with the red dough and a thicker rope with the white dough. Place the red rope next to the white rope.
  6. Twist Dough: Twist the red and white ropes together carefully to create that classic peppermint swirl look.
  7. Shape Pieces: Pinch off smaller sections of the twisted rope and roll each piece between your palms to smooth and round the edges.
  8. Dry Candy: Place the twisted ropes or shaped pieces on wax paper and let them dry for about 1 to 2 hours until they are less sticky and easier to cut.
  9. Cut Candy: Using a pizza cutter, carefully cut the ropes into individual candy pieces. It is preferable to wait a bit so the candy is not sticky for a cleaner cut.
  10. Final Drying: Leave the candies out on wax paper for 24 hours to fully dry and firm up.
  11. Storage: Once completely dry, store the butter mints in an airtight container at room temperature. Refrigeration is optional but not necessary.

Notes

  • Homemade butter mints store well at room temperature in an airtight container for 2–3 weeks.
  • If stored longer, the mints may soften but remain safe to eat; texture may change.
  • Use just enough food coloring to create a vibrant red without affecting taste.
  • You can adjust peppermint extract to your preference for stronger or milder flavor.
  • Work with small dough sections when twisting to make the process easier and neater.
  • Ensure your butter is softened to room temperature for easier mixing and best texture.
