- 8 large eggs
- 1 cup milk (whole milk or any dairy/non-dairy alternative)
- 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 24 Hawaiian rolls, sliced horizontally
- Confectioners’ sugar (optional, for serving)
- Maple syrup (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Make Custard: Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg in a wide, deep bowl.
- Heat Griddle: Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat and brush with 1 tablespoon of the butter.
- Dip and Cook: Working in batches, dip Hawaiian roll halves into the egg/milk mixture until saturated and shake off excess liquid before placing rolls on the heated griddle. Cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side.
- Keep Warm: Remove to a plate and keep warm while you continue cooking the remaining rolls. Add more butter to the griddle as needed until all rolls have been dipped and toasted.
- Serve: Sprinkle powdered sugar over Hawaiian roll french toast and drizzle on maple syrup, if desired, before serving.
