Ingredients
Units
Scale
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornmeal
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2/3 cup whole milk
- 2 cups white onions, chopped (about 1 medium onion)
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Oil for frying, as needed
Instructions
- Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and milk. Add onions and salt and pepper and stir to combine.
- Heat the Oil: Meanwhile, heat about 1/2-inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Fry the Fritters: Once the oil reaches 375°F, drop batter by the tablespoon into the hot oil, spreading the fritter out slightly. Brown on both sides until crisp.
- Serve: Remove to a paper towel to drain. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- Oil Temperature: Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the correct temperature. If the oil is too hot, the fritters will burn; if it’s not hot enough, they will absorb too much oil and become greasy.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Don’t overcrowd the skillet when frying the fritters. Fry in batches to ensure even cooking.
- Draining Excess Oil: Place the cooked fritters on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serving Suggestions: Serve these fritters as a side dish with your favorite meal, or enjoy them as a snack with dipping sauce.
