Description

These Crispy Amish Onion Fritters are a savory and delicious treat. With a crispy exterior and a soft, flavorful interior, they’re perfect as a side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups white onions, chopped (about 1 medium onion)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying, as needed

Instructions

  1. Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and milk. Add onions and salt and pepper and stir to combine.
  2. Heat the Oil: Meanwhile, heat about 1/2-inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Fry the Fritters: Once the oil reaches 375°F, drop batter by the tablespoon into the hot oil, spreading the fritter out slightly. Brown on both sides until crisp.
  4. Serve: Remove to a paper towel to drain. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Oil Temperature: Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the correct temperature. If the oil is too hot, the fritters will burn; if it’s not hot enough, they will absorb too much oil and become greasy.
  • Don’t Overcrowd: Don’t overcrowd the skillet when frying the fritters. Fry in batches to ensure even cooking.
  • Draining Excess Oil: Place the cooked fritters on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve these fritters as a side dish with your favorite meal, or enjoy them as a snack with dipping sauce.
